Abnormality is an extreme metal band based out of Massachusetts, USA. Purveying a violent hybrid of the heaviest subgenres of the extreme music spectrum, Abnormality mixes technicality and speed with devastating grooves. Abnormality came together in 2005 and features seasoned members Mallika, Jay, Josh, Jeremy, and Sam, all hailing from various underground acts such as Goratory, Teratism, Parasitic Extirpation, Sexcrement, Iranach, and Forced Asphyxiation. Over the span of a decade, Abnormality punished live audiences and worked to hone their craft.
Abnormality released a 3 song demo in 2007 from which a song was later featured in the videogame Rockband (2008). The band then self released an EP in 2010 entitled "The Collective Calm in Mortal Oblivion." On the strength of that EP, Abnormality soon after signed with Sevared Records and released their debut full length "Contaminating the Hive Mind" (2012). In support of the record, they set to work completing full American and European tours as well as several festival appearances in the US and South America. "Contaminating the Hive Mind" was considered a success and was re-pressed several times including in vinyl format under Sevared Records and Threshold of Pain Records. The hard work paid off, and has shown in the increasing number of sales and video hits.
Widely considered an up-and-coming act by many in the underground music circles, Abnormality signed with Metal Blade Records for their sophomore full length entitled "Mechanisms Of Omniscience." The new album is set for release in early 2016. "Mechanisms of Omniscience" focuses on hooks and powerful riffs, diving deeper sonically and emotionally than on previous efforts. This release marks the next evolution in the band., touting a darker, more sonically ambient and experimental approach, mixed with more mature songwriting and structures.
"This direction has us pulling back and focusing more on the listener, as well as branching out and taking more musical risks as well. There is a focus on groove, and sonic environment. We strived to pull together the concepts in a cohesive way, and give the listener an experience beginning to end." -Jeremy Henry (Guitar).
One constant in Abnormality's evolution has been the man behind the tracks, Peter Rutcho, who engineered and produced "Mechanisms of Omniscience, as well as the previous two albums. His vision and talents play so heavily into the music that the band considers him a 6th member.
"We are totally comfortable with him in every way possible. He creates a creative environment and helps to reduce the stress of recording. We trust his opinions implicitly, and that is no small matter when it comes to a producer." -Mallika Sundaramurthy (vocals)
The band has avoided stereotypical concepts in the past, and continues to do so on this record. Rather than writing the typical death and gore that accompanies this genre so much, they choose to write from a social and introspective viewpoint. Corruption, greed, illegal and immoral war, abuse by the powers-that-be remain prevalent in the band's lyrics, as well as a look into the human psyche and the root cause of these acts. Song themes range from the waging of war in secret computer labs using drones, to subliminal programming, to blocking people from reaching their spiritual enlightenment, to suicide, to the base instincts of all humans and the darker side of the human subconscious.
Abnormality is not easily defined, and hopefully will continue to be so as the band's musical endeavors continue to change and evolve. One thing is for certain, this will be a band to watch.
